Devon Rock

Greetings fellow ACHS '71' grads. What a fabulous forum is this web-site? I encourage each of you to provide an updated footnote to your lives and send it in soon.
After High School, I went to Oklahoma State University and during my senior year, joined a rock band in Las Vegas. I toured the U.S., Canada and Mexico for several years and settled with my wife and two children in Nashville, Tennessee, where I became a published songwriter and active session musician as well as working full-time with my own band. I left the music profession in 1988 and entered a new vocational chapter in life with many “regular jobs” and ultimately as a corporate executive in the aviation services industry.
Along the way, I became entangled with the typical trappings of life, so it was a personal milestone when I was re-introduced to the Christian faith in 1991. Among the fruits of my relationship with Jesus was a chance to use my musical gift in a different way. I wrote and performed music that gave me personal satisfaction that I had never experienced before. My faith let me cope with my own imperfections, family crisis and even divorce.
Life changed dramatically in 2004 with the budding/blooming prospect of a new/old relationship with a former high school sweetheart in the person of Julea Marrs. I refer to it as a 33 year “separation” ending in reconciliation. I think she was probably just playing “hard to get” and did so convincingly by serving as a devoted mother to her three children.
We are now engaged and are happier than....well, than we were when we were married to those other people. (I just wanted to see if you were still reading this.) But seriously, we plan to get married at the Central Christian Church in Ark City. That's where we were when I first realized that she was the sweetest, loveliest young girl that I had ever known. That remains true to this day...except for the “young” part.
If there is one thing I have learned in the last 53 years, it's that there's only one thing that we can take with us from this world. Relationships. I look forward to expanding relationships with my former classmates in the future....although probably not to the degree or intensity that I have expanded my relationship with Julea.
Like many people, my life has been filled with blessings, ups and downs, kids and terrific challenges. So much of who Devon Rock is comes from his first eighteen years in a little town in Southern Kansas. Someone once said that we are a composite of all of our experiences. I know that my experiences as a boy in Ark City High School became the foundation in the man I have become.
I owe much to many.
Thank you. |
